Overwatch League

The Overwatch League is the main eSports league for Overwatch. During Blizzcon 2016, Blizzard announced their plans for the league, using an organization of permanent teams in league placements similar to more traditional physical sports in the United States. This League is supposed to create a wealthy and fair competitive scene. Sponsors choose a city to represent and get players to form a team for said city. Using this system, it has already gotten a lot of support from major sports and eSports companies. The league demands a minimum salary of 50 thousand dollars a year for its players, and has prize pools of 3.5 million dollars.

The first season had a total of 12 teams participating. The 2019 season sees this number rise to 20 teams, as the Overwatch eSports scene continues to grow. The league matches are played weekly in the hyper modern Blizzard Arena in Los Angeles. As a result, the city has become the place to be in the Overwatch eSports scene.

Overwatch World Cup

The Overwatch World Cup is a yearly event held at Blizzcon. The format is country versus country. Countries must qualify at one of the eight worldwide qualifiers to participate in the finals at Blizzcon. The countries then compete in a knockout format to determine the best country in the world. All three editions, South-Korea came out on top. The Koreans didn’t even lose a single map at Blizzcon in 2016 and 2018.
